Week Commencing Monday 18th May 2020
Lesson 1 Monday Introduction to subtraction
Concept - I can tell the difference between more and less.
This video will outline the key language around subtraction.
It will explore more and less practically and will begin to look at what ‘less’ looks like by removing or taking away from an amount.
All of the children have had previous experience at school with the concept of subtraction, if they are finding the lessons easy then please feel free to move onto another lesson, try a task with numbers up to 20 or try one of the challenges.
Feel free to pause the video at any point to give your child a chance to answer a question or try something themselves.
Happy learning! :)
Lesson 2 Tuesday Teaching subtraction
Concept - I can tell the difference between more and less.
-I can notice how a quantity gets smaller by subtracting.
This video will teach the concept of subtraction using concrete objects, pictures numerals and symbols.
It will explore a subtraction number sentence.

Lesson 3 Wednesday Practising subtraction
Further exploration
-
I can record how to subtract using notation and mathematical symbols.
This video will teach the concept of subtraction using concrete objects, a number line, numerals and symbols. The video explains how to create your own number line if you are unable to print one.
It will explore subtraction number sentences. Your child will have the opportunity to write some of their own.

Lesson 4 Thursday - Problem solve
Well done for all of your work on subtraction so far this week. Every Thursday at school we complete a ‘problem solve’ task, this allows the children to apply their skills and knowledge.
Problem solve - I can problem solve using subtraction (with the support of a number line or concrete resources)
There is a resource available to print for this however, I have also shown a way that this can be drawn on paper if a printer is not available.
This video will model the use of a number line to answer various subtraction questions.
It will continue to explore subtraction practically using concrete resources.
It will give an opportunity for the children to write their own number sentences and find answers to mathematical problems.
Good luck with today's problem solving.
Happy learning! :)
Lesson 5 Friday Busy Bee Maths
Hello,
Well done for making it through this week of Maths learning!
At school on a Friday we have Busy Bee Maths, this is an opportunity for the children to explore, demonstrate, deepen and challenge their understanding of the weekly concept with a range of activities and challenges. They can also refer back to previous concepts that have been taught.
Today you and your child can choose which subtraction challenges or activities you would like to access, there might be an area that your child found tricky over the course of the week which you could practise or something that they really enjoyed that they would like to do more of. There are also some other challenges about other concepts, feel free to try these too.
Enjoy your Busy Bee Maths experience.
Happy learning! :)
